Our car now runs on diesel… kind of

We had a nice relaxing extended weekend away before my wife, Beth, started her new job at a new law firm. We went up to Union Pier in Michigan, went to a couple of the local wineries, including Tabor Hill, which President Ford brought to the White House. I had a crazy vodka made from grapes while there, and it was actually pretty good.

When we got back on Saturday, we went out to my cousin’s graduation party in Geneva. We had to leave early to get back to Chicago so we could make it to the Tragically Hip show at House of Blues, and stopped for gas on the way. I asked Beth if she would prefer to put gas in the car or wash the windows, she chose gas. As I am washing the windows, she says “The pump doesn’t fit right.” I thought she was referring to the rubber collar which is typically around the nozzle, but she said again “It doesn’t fit in the tank right.” I am coming around the side of the car opposite of her and look through the windows, only to see the gas nozzle still on the pump. Then it hits me… oh god, she is putting in diesel.

So I yell for her to stop, and after a couple of consultation phone calls to a few friends and family, we decide that we should just top off the tank and drive it off. It seems to work fine, she didn’t even put in a full gallon. It was, in the least, an interesting experiment. It also made for a hilarious drive home.

So our car runs on diesel, but only if you put in mostly gasoline.
